Here is the link to our video showing the touch action sensing. Notice that there should be a minimum of 3 fingers used as a tap action. This more closely mimics the action of placing an object on the coaster.  (click on the text "link" or "coaster" to access the youtube video)

Regarding the paper on the acrylic if you noticed it on your non-engraved coaster, it was there to protect from scratches in transport, please remove it by starting to peel it off from one of the corners. 

Hope you enjoy that shiny protected surface!
